Up until recently, when a lamb needed some warming up, it would come in our house and be put in a small dog crate with a space heater blowing on it. That worked okay but it wasn’t great for the lambs (or for us!)

Enter Martin’s building skills, and we are left with one awesome warming box!

The warming box is tucked in the tack room for extra protection and does a fantastic job of warming lambs up quickly.

He made a simple box with a hinged lid. In the side he cut a hole where the heat lamp fits snug. In the front is a small rectangular opening covered in chicken wire so we can see in without opening the lid and for ventilation. He placed a plastic tray in the bottom for easy removal and clean up!

The warming box holds six or so lambs and gets them to the temperature they need to be. This has saved so many more lambs than bringing them in the house ever would.

You can tell a lambs temperature is too low when it is lethargic, has a humped up stance, or stops eating. Pneumonia happens easily for lambs when the temperature changes drastically from day to night or with rain and low temps. Sounds like I just summed up a Kentucky winter, didn’t I?
