I swear we went just to look
Decided to go to the local Amish community’s sale this morning - just to look, of course - and ended up coming home with 13 chickens!
We picked 11 Buff Orpingtons and 2 silkies. The Buffs will be great for eggs and meat, once they get bigger, and we got the silkies mostly because they look and feel cool (and I really, really wanted them.) But what we are most excited for is their desire to eat bugs and parasites!
As soon as we have a mobile chicken house/roosting boxes built we will be putting the chickens in the sheep pastures with the sheep. The chickens will free roam (inside the pasture) during the day and eat the ticks, bugs, and parasites we don’t want our sheep getting into. Then at night they will go in their house and lay eggs.
Having this mobile system will allow us to move the chickens with the sheep so they can help clean up the pastures and still lay eggs.
We are so excited for this addition onto the farm! I’ll be sure to share how we make our mobile house once it’s done!
