Keeping hay dry

Keeping hay dry

Time for another farm DIY share! We love turning old things into something new and using what we have on hand to solve a problem.

This winter we decided to switch to feeding round bales because we found some really great ones for a good price. The trouble with round bales is that they sit out in the weather for longer and can sometimes turn bad if the sheep don’t eat it quick enough.

We found a company that could make us hay cradles custom made smaller to accommodate the sheep. After that we needed to figure out how to keep the bales drier for longer because Kentucky winter means rain, and lots of it.

Harry was able to weld some leftover panels from the lambing facility build onto the top of the hay cradles to create a dome. From there he covered them with a tarp. This simple DIY has allowed the bales to stay dry and last longer!

We love discovering new ways to solve problems and seeing how others might solve the same problem a different way!

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and will continue to follow our progress into the new year!
